COMMUNITY GROUPS

Back from a road trip, we prepare for 'Holiday Flourishes'

by John Dellamanna

The North Coast Men's Chorus is back from its first road trip to the booming metropolis of Akron. We received quite a cor-

dial welcome from the Akron gay community, first in the

form of "standing room only" at the concert, and then with a lovely recep-

tional rendition of his music.

As I mentioned in this column recently, our goal is not only to make beautiful music, but also to make people proud to be gay through our music. Judging by the looks on the faces of our au-

dience, I'd say we

did

just that. Thanks a lot to the

tion afterwards. We thank the members of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Akron for the reception as well as for the use of their beautiful house of worship.

During this concert we sang an original piece composed by Akron's own Eric Helmuth. Eric honored us by accompanying the chorus as we sang "Finally Here." I think I can speak for the entire chorus when I say that we also honored Eric with an excep-

and women of "The Rubber City"! We

hope to see you again in our own backyard. Thanks also to Stonewall Akron and Vi. sions-Akron, and Adams Street for much needed pre-concert publicity.

From time to time, the Chorus likes to kick back and have a non-singing fun event. Our most recent such social gathering was at home of one of our baritones, Todd Narvin. At Todd's home we had Halloween costume party, friends and spouses, dates etc. all invited. The "girls" and "boys" participated in well orchestrated costume and pumpkin carv ing competitions. The drag was from the most amateur to the stratospheric camp of

The sleepy hollow of Strongsville, is still buzzing with the events of that evening.

This is just one of the things we do as a chorus. We mention it here quite simply to entice you and remind you of our upcoming holiday concert, "Holiday Flourishes," this December 15, and 16 at the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church in Cleveland. Since it is such a busy time of the year we try and give you as much advance notice as possible, as well as two concert dates, when you can join Tim Robson and the North Coast Men's Chorus as we "Sing the Dream.”

COMMENTS

An oral form of ganciclovir has been approved for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, a viral infection that can be site-threatening for those with HIV infection. This study requires a stay of 5 days and 4 nights on 4 separate occasions at our facility in Pittsburgh. Participants will be paid $1,500.00 upon completion of the study.

Participants will be assigned to 1 of 4 possible drug combinations. Study duration is a minimum of 80 weeks. A continuation study with open-label saquinavir is available under certain conditions.

Thymopentin (Immune modulator)

A Phase III randomized, placebo-controlled study that will evaluate the safety and efficacy of thymopentin in asymptomatic, HIVinfected individuals receiving monotherapy (AZT, ddI or D4T) or combination therapy (AZT/ddI or AZT/ddC).

100 to 400

Must have history of at least 6 continuous months of AZT monotherapy which was tolerated.

Thymopentin is an immune modulator which has been shown in previous studies to be more effective in reducing HIV disease progression when used with AZT than AZT monotherapy. Study duration is a maximum of two years. Open-label treatment with thymopentin is available under certain conditions.
